Blood pressure

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of arteries as the heart pumps blood around the body. Systolic pressure is the pressure when the heart contracts and pushes blood out and diastolic pressure is the pressure when the heart relaxes and fills with blood. In adults the systolic pressure normally ranges between 80 and 120 and the diastolic pressure between 60 and 90.

In YC_BS3 blood pressure was measured in a sitting position with an Omron automatic blood pressure monitoring device. The cuff was attached to the non-dominant arm and participants were asked to remain relaxed and still, and refrain from talking and laughing. In YE_FITNSS resting blood pressure was measured twice (in the 4th and 5th minute, Omron HEM-907 digital blood pressure monitor). The mean of these two measurements was used as baseline blood pressure measure. In YE_COG18 systolic and diastolic blood pressure was measured at four time points during the testing day using a Spacelabs 90207 device (Redmont, Washington, USA). If present during the testing day, parental blood pressure was also measured. In YE_ATTEF3 systolic and diastolic blood pressure was measured with an Omron blood pressure monitor in a seated position.
