TRAILS: Clinical cohort

TRAILS (TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey) is an ongoing, multidisciplinary research on the psychological, social and physical development of adolescents and young adults. More than 2500 participants have been followed since their tenth or eleventh year. For more than 20 years, these participants have been assessed every 2 to 3 years, through questionnaires, interviews, tests and physical measurements. Information was collected not only from the participants themselves, but also from parents, teachers, peers, and partners. TRALS consists of a population cohort (TRAILS: POP) and a clinical cohort (TRAILS: CC).

Purpose	During adolescence and young adulthood, people go through profound changes, both physically and psychologically. These changes affect the way they interact with others, and how they process and cope with their experiences. The choices made and directions taken in these phases of life can have a major impact on future well-being, behavior and health, and even affect the next generation. More knowledge of the causes of a favorable or unfavorable development can help to prevent problems or treat them at an early stage. Not only problematic developmental trajectories are of interest, but successful ones as well.
