Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI)

The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) consists of 53 items covering nine symptom dimensions: Somatization, Obsession-Compulsion, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostility, Phobic anxiety, Paranoid ideation and Psychoticism; and three global indices of distress: Global Severity Index, Positive Symptom Distress Index, and Positive Symptom Total. The global indices measure current or past level of symptomatology, intensity of symptoms, and number of reported symptoms, respectively.

The validated self-report questionnaire Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) was used to collect information on a spectrum of psychiatric symptoms. Subscales including anxiety (6 items), depression (6 items), hostility (5 items), interpersonal sensitivity (4 items), obsessive-compulsive (6 items), psychoticism (5 items), paranoia (5 items), phobia (5 items), and somatization (7 items) were collected. At 20 weeks of gestation and at 2 months postnatally, the full BSI was administered (total of 53 items). Hence, a Global Severity Index can also be calculated, being the sum of all BSI items. At 6 months, 3 years, 10 years and 18 years, we only administered anxiety, depression, hostility, and interpersonal sensitivity (i.e., total of 20 items). Items are rated on 5-point Likert scale
